Technical Data | Production Size 12" x 12" x 1 1/2" | Bonding A number of bonding/brazing techniques can be used to successfully attach POCOFoam to other materials. It is critical that the joining method does not impede or interrupt the thermal transfer between the substrate and the graphite foam. One proven bonding procedure is S-Bond™ by Materials Resources International. See case study or for more information visit www.materialsresources.com | Machining POCOFoam is readily machinable using conventional equipment. | Phase Change The porosity of POCOFoam has been successfully filled with a paraffin wax phase change material (PCM). No elaborate methods were required due to the foam's affinity for the melted PCM. It is believed that the high thermal conductivity of POCOFoam can enhance the performance of phase change systems by efficiently transferring heat into the PCM, which is held in the porosity of the foam. Tests are currently underway. | Laminates POCOFoam has been successfully laminated with a number of materials such as carbon, copper, aluminum, and metal foils. Structural integrity of the material was improved; evaluation of thermal properties is underway. | Coatings Nickel and copper have been successfully deposited on foam artifacts by conventional electro plating and electoless plating. Results have shown increased strength and durability. The additional benefit of providing an attachment surface for soldering or brazing has also been seen. Testing is underway. | Infiltrations POCOFoam has been successfully strengthened by subjecting the foam to POCO's proprietary amorphous carbon infiltration process. Compressive strengths have been increased by up to 50% using this process. Infiltration through the full thickness appears to be possible with no appreciable change in the machining properties. | Absorption While POCOFoam readily absorbs some materials, it rejects water.
